Sunbury,
Georgia is an area rich with heritage, history
and recreation for all ages. Quick and easy access to the
IntraCoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as
close proximity to Savannah, Richmond Hill, Brunswick and
the Golden Isles, make Sunbury an ideal place to call home.
Savannah International Airport is just 45 minutes away,
while Jacksonville International Airport is an easy 90-minute
drive.
Originally inhabited by the Guale Indians, and graced by
one of the deepest natural channels on the East Coast, Sunbury
was settled about 1757, and quickly became the second busiest
seaport in Georgia. Liberty County was named for its role
in America's struggle for independence. The first flag of
independence in Georgia was raised in Liberty County when
it was still part of Saint John's Parish. Fort Morris was
built in Sunbury to protect Georgia from attacks by the
British. On November 25th, 1778 the British forces demanded
the immediate surrender of the fort. Colonel John McIntosh
sent a defiant reply: "Come and take it!" Shortly
thereafter, the British took the fort after a short but
heavy bombardment. During the next hundred years, the fort
would be modified and used several times by both American
and British forces.
Today, Sunbury is home to the exclusive
residential communities of The Village at Sunbury, The Pointe,
and Merchants Wharf, as well as The Shrimp Docks and Sunbury
Crab Company restaurants, and a public boat ramp. Sunbury
is the largest residential area east of Interstate 95 in
Liberty County. Further east, Colonel's Island includes
several developments situated on the Medway and North Newport
Rivers and a marina open to the public.
